FD330-22 is a very classic and widely used bag air spring for rear axles designed for heavy commercial vehicles (especially trailers and semi-trailers).

FD330-22 is a bag air spring. Its core structure includes:

  • Rubber airbag: It is composed of multiple layers of high-strength rubber and cord (usually polyester, aramid or steel wire). The cord layer provides the main load-bearing strength and limits the shape of the airbag expansion, and the rubber layer provides air tightness, flexibility and environmental protection (oil, ozone, UV protection).
  • Metal upper cover plate (top plate): Used to connect the frame or suspension arm, usually with mounting holes.
  • Metal base (piston): A 22-inch diameter base, usually made of stamped steel or cast iron, installed on the axle (such as the rear axle housing). The design of the base (shape, profile) has an important influence on the rolling characteristics and load curve of the airbag. The base of the FD series is usually designed to optimize the rolling of the airbag and provide stable support.
  • Working principle: When the airbag is inflated, it is like a compressible "air pillow". When the vehicle load increases or encounters bumps, the airbag is compressed and the internal air pressure increases to support the weight; when the load is reduced or the bump passes, the airbag expands back to its original position and the air pressure decreases. The airbag "rolls" on the base to achieve the change in travel.

Installation and Maintenance


Installation: It is necessary to strictly follow the installation instructions of the vehicle manufacturer and Continental. Make sure that the upper cover and the base are firmly installed and centered, and the airbag is not twisted. Connect the air line (usually through quick-connect fittings) and ensure that there is no leakage.

Maintenance:

  • Regular visual inspection: Check the airbag for cracks, cuts, abnormal bulges, exposed cords, rubber aging (powdering, cracking), whether the joint with the base/upper cover is intact, and whether the base is rusted and deformed.
  • Check for leaks: When the vehicle is stationary (especially when fully loaded), observe whether the airbag collapses significantly in a short period of time, or apply soapy water to the connection between the airbag and the pipe to check for bubbles.
  • Cleaning: Clean the airbag surface regularly to remove oil, dirt and corrosive substances (such as snow-melting salt).
  • Avoid contact: Prevent the airbag from contacting grease, solvents, strong acids and alkalis and other chemicals.
  • Replacement: Once the airbag is found to be damaged (even if it is small), severely aged or leaking beyond repair, the air springs on the same axis must be replaced in pairs (sometimes it is even recommended to replace the entire vehicle), and ensure that products of the same model and specifications are used. Using airbags of different models or with a large difference in age will cause the vehicle to have an incorrect posture, unstable handling and accelerated wear.
